The Plaka
Old Country feel in the middle of the city...

So you're staying in Athens right, and you want to find some of that old world style but you don't want to venture far from those five star hotels and nightclubs? Well the Plaka can be the perfect solution for you. It has the feel of a country village right in the city. The Plaka is the oldest part of Athens's Greece, it's a travel attraction because of its feel and how close it is to the Acropolis. If you're driving a car, forget about it, it's that old school that cars are no in use here. So you will have to drive close to the Plaka and park. Because you will have to foot it from here. Also, if you're looking for that old world feel this may be your place because loud music is not tolerated. Yeah, I said it, if you're the type of guy that has his speakers blasting so high that it makes your car sound like tin this is not the place for you. This place is super quiet. The city of Athens passed an ordinance in the seventies restricting the loud music from this area in particular.

Why would someone come to the Plaka? There are many reasons of why someone would want to come here. The first thing that can be said about the Plaka is that it's the most up kept neighborhood in Athens, many dispute that it is the best neighborhood in Athens. The shopping district is amazing because of that, old world stores, jewelry dealers, art and clothing are some of the types of shops that you will find in the Plaka. Also if you're a lover of art and culture you will love this place, the amount of museums and such located here are amazing. I can rattle off some names, The Children's Museum, The Greek Folk Art Museum, and the Jewish museum are some of the places of art and culture you can take in while you're here.

How does one get here? Well if you can find the acropolis congratulations you have already found the place. Its right underneath it, the main thoroughfares into the Plaka are Kydatheneon and Adrianou streets. So I would take Adrianou because of the things you can see as you come into the city. As you come in you pass an amazing flea market, you will turn on a small pedestrian street called Kydatheneon, and then your there, welcome to the Plaka.

So I encourage you that if your staying in Athens to check out this place, it's an awesome attraction and a place where you can get some of the old feel of ancient Greece without going far. So whether you're here for authentic Greek art or jewelry. Or if you're her for the photo ops and places to see, check out the Plaka, the heart of the city, a quiet piece of the ancient in a modern world.
